The news that two high school football players in Steubenville, Ohio, were found guilty of raping an intoxicated 16-year-old girl lit up Twitter on Sunday, with many users—most of them women—celebrating the verdict while calling for more work to be done to transform America's rape culture.

Central Africa Republic rebels issue ultimatum, detain ministers

BANGUI (Reuters) - Rebels in the Central African Republic have detained their five ministers in the government and threatened to break a January ceasefire unless prisoners are freed and other demands met.

The insurgents came close to capturing the capital Bangui and overthrowing President Francois Bozize late last year before accepting the peace deal in January under which some of their leaders joined the central government.

But increasingly bitter rhetoric from both sides is threatening to pitch the mineral-rich but impoverished, landlocked country back into conflict.

In a sign of growing tension, the Seleka rebel military command detained five ministers from its side on Sunday, preventing them from returning to the capital after talks with U.N., African Union and European Union officials.

The insurgents have demanded the release of political prisoners and the departure of about 400 South African troops who were sent in to prop up Bozize's army.

"We are giving Bozize and those around him 72 hours to meet our principal demands, otherwise we will resume hostilities," Seleka's spokesman, Colonel Sylvain Bordas, said after a meeting with the international officials in the town of Sibut on Sunday.

"In the meantime, all our ministers in the government will stay here with us. The rest of the delegation may go back to Bangui," he said.

One of the ministers told French RFI radio on Monday that the military command was detaining them as a means to force Bozize to accept their demands immediately.

The insurgents have also called for the incorporation of 2,000 men from their group into the national army and the recognition of their military ranks.

The government of the Central African Republic was not immediately available for comment.

Chad, Gabon, Cameroon, Republic of Congo and South Africa have deployed hundreds of troops to shore up Bozize's army after it suffered a string of defeats, allowing the rebels to advance to within 75 km (45 miles) of Bangui.

The five ministers were being kept at a rebel camp in Sibut, about 185 km (115 miles) from the capital where they discussed with diplomats how to defuse the latest crisis.

The United States said on Sunday it was concerned about worsening security in Central African Republic, urging all sides to implement the ceasefire deal.

Insurgents seized two eastern towns last week, threatening to resume their insurgency if their demands were disregarded.

They previously insisted that Bozize's resignation was a precondition for peace and that the president, who seized power in a Chadian-backed 2003 coup, should stand trial at the International Criminal Court.

Central African Republic, a former French colony, remains among the least developed in the world despite rich deposits of gold, diamonds and uranium.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Supreme Court has turned away an appeal from a Minnesota woman who has been ordered to pay record companies $222,000 for the unauthorized downloading of copyrighted music.

The justices did not comment Monday in letting stand the judgment against Jammie Thomas-Rasset of Brainerd, Minn. She claimed in court papers that the ordered payment was excessive.

The music industry filed thousands of lawsuits against people it accused of downloading music without permission and without paying for it. Almost all the cases settled for $3,500.

Lawyer Kiwi Camara said Thomas-Rasset is one of only two defendants whose case went to trial. The other is former Boston University student Joel Tenenbaum, who also lost and was ordered to pay $675,000.

The case is Thomas-Rasset v. Capitol Records, 12-715.

　◇３人眠る墓地一帯、花畑に－－妻と孫２人失った、宮城・石巻の佐藤富士夫さん（６４）

　灰色の小鳥が１羽、妻と孫２人が眠る墓の前に舞い降りた。１１日の寒い朝、宮城県石巻市北上町十三浜の農業、佐藤富士夫さん（６４）は、津波で流された自宅近くの墓地で花の苗を植えていた。「きょうはいろんな人が拝んでけれっからな」。３人に話しかけた。

　２年前、佐藤さんは自宅の庭先で揺れに襲われた。妻成子（せいこ）さん（当時５８歳）は、一緒に暮らす吉浜小１年の孫娘杏慈（あんじ）ちゃん（同７歳）がいつも宿題をしながら迎えを待つ同小隣の市北上総合支所へ行ったようだった。杏慈ちゃんの兄で同小４年の帆高（ほだか）君（同１０歳）もそこへ逃げたはずだ。震災の５年前に新設された２階建ての支所は市の指定避難所。「あそこなら安全だ」。佐藤さんは両親と高台のトンネルに逃げた。

　夜明けを待って３人を迎えに行き、目を疑った。支所は全壊していた。泣きながら３人の名を呼んで捜し歩いた。駐車場に杏慈ちゃんの小さな亡きがらが大人たちの遺体と一緒に並べられていた。帆高君と成子さんとは、１～２週間後に遺体安置所で対面した。

　支所では逃げ込んだ住民と市職員の計５４人が死亡・行方不明となった。「あんな情けねえことなかった。『津波が来ても大丈夫だ』って、ずっと家族に言ってたんだ」

　初盆を前に、がれきの下に倒れていた先祖代々の墓石を元に戻し、３人の納骨をした。墓の周りは津波をかぶって荒れていた。１１年１１月、佐藤さんは周りに菜の花の種をまくことにした。「仏さんへの償いっていうのかなあ。お墓の周りを花でいっぱいにしてやりてえと思ったんだ」

　両親が東京の弟に引き取られるなどして、佐藤さんは三男公彦さん（３０）と２人で仮設住宅に暮らす。農協理事に加え、仮設住宅の自治会長、市のまちづくり委員長も引き受け、忙しい。だがスーパーで一人、梅干しや納豆を買っていると、料理上手だった妻をふと思い出す。小中学生を見れば孫たちの成長した姿を想像した。「日がたてばたつほど思い出して。段々悲しくなってくるんだ」

　墓前に毎日通った。声がよく届くように墓石に額をつけて「来たよ」と大声で呼んだ。３人が眠るそばで種をまくと、ざわつく心が静まる気がした。いつしか種をまいた範囲は約５００平方メートルの広さになった。河原から石を運んで道を作り、昨年末には黄や紫のパンジーを植えて３人の名を花文字で描いた。

　最近、３人が自分を「生かしてくれたのかな」と思う。３人の無事をあれほど信じ切れなかったら、自分は必死で逃げなかっただろう。花を育て、そばで３人を見守ることが、これからの自分の務めだと思えてきた。

　今月、チューリップとユリの球根を植えた。コスモスの種もまこう,moncler ベスト 今後も継続していく」と強調した。いつか色とりどりの花で墓地一帯を埋めるのが佐藤さんの夢だ。「花がいっぱい咲いて、鳥っこがいっぱい来たら美しいべ。３人も喜ぶんでねえかな」

MIAMI (Reuters) - Argentine developer Jose Luis Melo watched as Miami's real estate market reeled from the U.S. housing crash and thousands of the city's condominiums sat unsold -- and decided it was time to build.

It was late 2010 and Melo, who runs the Melo Group real estate company with his two sons, bought a $1.4 million parcel of land near downtown Miami.

Months later, the Melos lifted the first construction crane in the city's post-housing bubble era, betting they could find buyers for condos in a new 17-story tower.

"People told us 'You guys are crazy. The market is awash in units and you are going to build?'" he said, adding that he preferred to sell his own new building. The building's 98 condominiums sold out in just five months.

The condos were snapped up by cash-rich Latin Americans who have flocked to Miami real estate, helping to spur an unexpected rebound in a market that only three years ago stood as a poster child of America's housing bust. The buying highlights the role investors have played in some major U.S. cities showing strong signs of a revival after the crash.

Wealthy Latin Americans have long invested in south Florida property, but this time the resurgence in Miami is getting an extra lift from South American developers like Melo.

Increasingly developers from Argentina, Brazil, Mexico and Venezuela are getting into the act to meet demand from Latin Americans looking for a stable place to park their money and to make extra income through rentals.

"I've never seen them with the kind of clout they are carrying right now in construction and development," said Peter Zalewski, principal of real estate consultancy Condo Vultures. "It really is a coming of age period."

Buoyed by rising property prices and increasing sales, the real estate industry in South Florida is abuzz over more than 80 announced plans for new residential projects, and Latin American developers are involved in nearly one-third of them, according to Zalewski.

The developers are capitalizing on Latin Americans' long held view of Miami real estate as a safe haven against political and economic volatility at home. The Latin-flavored city, where Spanish is widely spoken,r4i 3ds, is a popular shopping destination and vacation playground.

Recent currency devaluations in Argentina, Brazil and Venezuela and fears that currencies in those countries may continue to weaken are driving the property buying, brokers say.

In 2012, Venezuelans worried about an inflation-wracked economy, soaring crime and political uncertainty at home, led all foreign buyers in Miami for a third straight year, accounting for 15 percent all sales. They were followed by Argentines and Brazilians.

A sharp increase in real estate prices in Latin America has also made Miami property more attractive. According to the real estate website Zillow, Miami property values are nearly 50 percent off their 2006 peak.

The increased presence of Latin American developers also reflects how their region has benefited from a healthy stretch of economic growth and has given them an unprecedented opportunity to look beyond their own borders to build.

"Before, we were more isolated and looking inward. Now we've started to think more globally," said Eduardo Constantini, head of Consultatio, a major Argentine real estate developer and financial firm.

Like many other developers, Consultatio saw opportunity in Miami's housing downturn and took advantage of a sharp drop in prices to pick up one of two sites it is now developing.

The group paid $80 million in 2009 for a waterfront site in Key Biscayne, one of Miami's most exclusive areas, where construction is well underway on a luxury, 154-unit condominium twin-tower with prices that start at more than a $1 million.

Consultatio bought another piece of prime beachfront property last year for $220 million in Miami Beach's tony Bal Harbour neighborhood in one of south Florida's biggest Miami land sale deals in 2012.

Other companies, lured by fire-sale prices in Miami's slump, seized on opportunities in commercial real estate.

Mexican developer Agave Holdings, which is affiliated with tequila producer Jose Cuervo, started looking at Miami during the U.S. downturn after deciding it wanted to diversify its real estate holdings outside of Mexico.

"After the housing crisis, there was a great opportunity to find good prices," said Jose Antonio Perez, managing director for Agave Holdings.

The company purchased an office building in 2009 that once belonged to the Exxon Mobil Corporation in Miami's affluent Coral Gables neighborhood. It then invested more than $150 million to renovate the property, called 396 Alhambra, which today is home to offices for HBO Latin America and spirits company Diageo.

But it is the residential market where many Latin American developers have focused their attention as interest from international buyers, particularly South Americans, has helped sales and prices recover.

Faena helped transform the Puerto Madero riverfront neighborhood in his native Buenos Aires, converting a series of rundown buildings, including an old mill, into a luxury enclave of fine dining anchored by a five-star hotel, an arts center and apartment buildings.

■生活習慣改善に新たな指標　メタボリックシンドローム（内臓脂肪症候群）への予防作用が期待される長寿ホルモン「アディポネクチン」の血中濃度を、健康診断での測定項目に入れる動きが出ている。メタボの元凶である内臓脂肪の量は分かりづらい面があるが、アディポネクチンの濃度の数値化により、生活習慣病のリスクの指標として認識しやすくなる。（山本雅人）　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　◇　◆具体的アドバイス　アディポネクチンは、住友病院（大阪市北区）の松澤佑次院長が大阪大学教授だった平成７年、ヒトから発見。翌年に論文で発表し、日本発の発見として国際的な認知を得た。　松澤院長はその成果を臨床で生かしたいと、同病院で扱う人間ドックや企業健診の受診者に対し、１９年４月からアディポネクチンを必須の測定項目にした。測定法は大塚製薬研究所との共同研究で開発された。　アディポネクチンは血管保護の作用があり、脂肪細胞から正常に分泌されていると、動脈硬化などの抑制に効果が期待できる。食べ過ぎや運動不足で内臓脂肪が蓄積されると、分泌量が減るという特徴がある。　これまで、内臓脂肪を具体的にどこまで減らしたらいいかという部分があいまいだった。しかし、松澤院長によると、「アディポネクチンの数値が低いので生活習慣病のリスクが高まります。数値が上がるまで内臓脂肪を減らしましょう」と、具体的なアドバイスが可能になったという。< 前のページ12次のページ >

トップリーグ最終節(６日、神戸製鋼２９－４３サントリー、ホームズ）テンポの速い攻撃で序盤からトライを重ねたサントリーが、チーム初の全勝で１位のリーグ戦を終えた。２位との勝ち点差１３はリーグ史上最大差の独走。優勝候補が最終戦も強さを存分に見せつけた。

　圧巻だったのは、前半１６分に神戸製鋼がシンビン（一時的退場）で数的不利になった直後からの怒涛（どとう）の攻めだった。左へ展開してトライを奪ったＷＴＢ小野沢が、同じような形で３連続トライ。史上１位を更新する通算１０６トライとした３４歳は「全部勝ててよかった。常に前の週できなかった課題を持って、みんなが一戦一戦に臨んできた結果」と胸を張った。

　“ヤングなでしこ”落選の悔しさを自身初の国立のピッチで晴らした。日本体育大FW植村祥子(1年=藤枝順心高)は2ゴールで2連覇に貢献。「ここまで本当に辛かったし、厳しい試合が何試合も続いて、疲労的にも結構キツくて、自分のプレーが出来るか不安だった。でも試合に入れば、みんなの応援も力に変えることができて、いいボールも自分を信じて出してくれた。こうやって2点取れたことは嬉しいです」と満面の笑みを見せた。

　U-20日本女子代表候補。U-20女子W杯(8月)を控えた7月の強化合宿では代表候補メンバーに選出されていた。だが直前で代表落ち。その悔しさを“ヤングなでしこ”もU-20W杯で戦った国立で爆発させる。前半14分、左スローインから左SB藤澤真凛(3年=十文字高)がDF3人の間を強引なドリブルで突破すると、その折り返しを右足ダイレクトでゴールへ押し込んだ。

「絶対に点取ってやろうと思っていた」と先制点を決めた植村はさらに18分、MF嶋田千秋(3年=日テレ・メニーナ)の縦パスで抜けだすと、追走するDF2人を振りきってそのまま左足シュートをゴールへ流し込んだ。「裏へ飛び出すというのが自分の長所だと思っているので、そこはみんなも分かってくれている。裏へ抜け出して点が取れたのは良かったです」という1年生ストライカーは2発でチームに大きなアドバンテージをもたらした。

　早大の最終ラインには高校時代から何度も対戦したライバルで、“ヤングなでしこ”の主力のひとりとして世界3位に貢献したCB高木ひかり(1年=常葉学園橘高)がいた。「(ヤングなでしこから)落ちて、自分でも(U-20女子W杯に)出たいというのが本当にあった。そこで自分は本当に弱いと思ったし、まだまだ努力が足りないと思いました」と悔しさを力に変えてきた植村は、この日高木の守るゴールに2発を叩き込んだ。「ブー(高木)とは高校の時から、戦っていて、本当に上手い選手なので、自分がどれだけできるのか楽しみでした。(2得点は)素直に嬉しいですね。自分でもブーみたいな『代表の選手とやれる』という思いは強いです」。U-20女子W杯で世界と戦う夢はかなわなかった。だがこの日大きな自信をつけた1年生FWは、なでしこJAPAN入りを目指してさらに成長を続ける。

2012年を代表するノートPC“10選”
2012年は、第3世代Core（開発コード名：Ivy Bridge）、高画素密度のIPS液晶ディスプレイ、そしてタッチ操作を重視したWindows 8と、キーテクノロジーがどっと押し寄せ、革新的なノートPCが次々と登場した。まさに激動の1年だったといえる。

　それでは、個人的に強く印象に残った合計10のモデルを取り上げつつ、この1年の業界動向を振り返っていこう。

●未来を先取りした「15インチMacBook Pro Retina」

　「これは2年先、3年先のPCの画面だな」――そう感じずにはいられなかった。アップルが6月に発売した「MacBook Pro Retinaディスプレイモデル」の美しい表示は、それほどまでに感動的だ。画素密度の数値（約220ppi）は、iPadやiPhoneのRetinaディスプレイに比べればだいぶ劣るのだが、それでも15.4型ワイドの大画面で見るRetinaクオリティの臨場感は別格に違いない。

　2012年前半、最も強い存在感を放ったのは、この15インチMacBook Pro Retinaディスプレイモデルだった。とにかく写真や映像の美しさは文章で表現しきれないほど。これで精細なカラーPDFデータなどを見ると、いよいよ雑誌類の電子書籍化も実用的な段階に来ていると改めて意識する。10月には13インチモデルもラインアップに加わり、2012年もアップルはディスプレイの高画素密度化に積極的だった。

　Windows PCにおいては、Retinaディスプレイのようなアプローチはまだ本格化していないが、それでも画面の高画素密度化と表示品質の向上は着実に進んでいる。13型はもちろん、11型や12型のクラスでもIPS方式のフルHD液晶ディスプレイを備えたPCは複数販売され、高画素密度ならではの精細な表示を体感できる製品が少しずつ増えてきた。

　この高画素密度はもはやスマートフォンやタブレットでは欠かせない要素になりつつあるが、これからはWindowsノートPCでもそうなってくるだろう。そしてこの流れは、アプリケーションの設計やコンテンツのあり方にも大きな影響を与えることになる。

●軽量志向を極めたUltrabook「LaVie Z」

　Retinaディスプレイ以外で2012年前半の大きな出来事といえば、Ivy Bridgeこと第3世代Coreプロセッサー・ファミリーの登場だ。3Dトランジスタ技術をいち早く採り入れた22ナノメートルのプロセスルールを採用したことで、第2世代Core（開発コード名：Sandy Bridge）以上に電力効率が向上し、高性能かつ省電力になった。

　第3世代Coreにはモバイル向けにTDP（熱設計電力）を下げた超低電圧版も用意され、これを採用する第2世代のUltrabookも誕生。第1世代のUltrabook（Sandy Bridge搭載）では投入を見送っていたメーカーからも魅力的な製品が次々と発売され、国内メーカーの健闘も目を引いた。

　中でも約875グラムという超軽量ボディを引っさげ、NECから8月に発売された13.3型Ultrabook「LaVie Z」のインパクトは絶大だ。この製品のすごさは、単に軽いだけでなく、実用性も現代のモバイルノートPCとしてほぼ完璧に確保したところにある。

　1600×900ドット表示の13.3型ワイド液晶ディスプレイに、キーピッチ約18ミリのキーボードを備え、パームレストも十分にあり、パフォーマンスも他の“重い”Ultrabookに見通りしない。インテルがUltrabookを推進するずっと前から優れたモバイルPCを生み出してきた日本市場においても、ここまでの軽量ボディと実用性を両立した製品は類を見ないといえる。

　特に近年のUltrabookを含めたモバイルノートPCは、薄さや性能はともかく、軽さという点ではあまり進歩していない。Ultrabookも1.2キロ以上ある製品がほとんどだ。軽量化を突き詰めたモバイルノートPCが少なくなってきているだけに、このLaVie Zは実に貴重な存在だ。

●個性的な第2世代Ultrabookが続々――「dynabook R632」「ZENBOOK Prime UX31A」「ThinkPad X1 Carbon」「Floral Kiss」

　同じく軽量志向のUltrabookとしては、東芝の13.3型モデル「dynabook R632」も挙げておきたい。重さは約1.12キロとLaVie Zには及ばないものの、3基のUSBポートやアナログRGB出力、有線LAN、WiMAXを備えるなど、Ultrabookとしては充実した端子類を装備しており、こちらも貴重な存在である。

　そのほか、重さは平凡ながら、いち早くフルHD液晶ディスプレイを搭載しながらリーズナブルにまとめたASUSTeK Computerの13.3型モデル「ZENBOOK Prime UX31A」、最高レベルのキーボードを搭載したレノボ・ジャパンの14型モデル「ThinkPad X1 Carbon」なども魅力的な存在だ。ZENBOOK Primeシリーズには11.6型フルHD液晶ディスプレイを備えた「ZENBOOK Prime UX21A」もある。

　これまでにない製品としては、女性にターゲットを絞った「Floral Kiss」こと富士通の13.3型Ultrabook「FMV LIFEBOOK CH55/J」にも注目したい。富士通は「FMV LIFEBOOK UH75/H」という完成度の高い14型Ultrabookも出したのだが、今回は話題性からこちらを選出した。ボディのカラーだけでなく、排気口やボタン類、マウス、ACアダプタに至る細部まで「女子向けデザイン」を徹底した意欲作だ。

●時代はハイブリッドPCへ――「VAIO Duo 11」「TAICHI21」「XPS 12」

　現在進行形で市場をにぎわせているのが、Windows 8に合わせて登場してきたハイブリッドPCだ。状況に応じて、クラムシェル型ノートとタブレットの両方のスタイルを切り替えながら利用できるPCをこう呼ぶ。

　ハイブリッドボディを実現する方法はさまざまだ。ディスプレイ部をスライドしたり回転させる変形型、タブレットとキーボードユニットで構成される分離・合体型、そして2画面型などバラエティに富んでおり、市場を華やかに彩っている。

　Windows 8はタッチ操作を強く意識し、（iOS端末のように）シンプルかつ滑らかで快適な操作感という概念を採り入れた新しいユーザーインタフェースを導入しつつ、Windows 7までのユーザーインタフェースもそのまま備えるハイブリッド的なOSとなった。これをフルに活用しようとすれば、自然とこういう形になるわけだ。

　中でもソニーの「VAIO Duo 11」は、心地よくワンアクションで変形できる精度の高いスライド機構に加えて、タッチパネルやデジタイザスタイラスも含めた11.6型フルHD液晶ディスプレイの品質が秀逸。これを活用するための多彩なアプリも用意しており、即戦力として活躍できるハイブリッドPCに仕上がっている。ソニーストア直販のVAIOオーナーメードモデルではメモリを8Gバイトに増設できる点もメリットだろう。

　ASUSが投入した「TAICHI21」の先進性も見事だ。クラムシェル型ボディのトップカバー内外両面に11.6型フルHD液晶ディスプレイを搭載しており、開いた状態では内側、閉じた状態では外側と、表示画面を切り替えることで、変形なしでクラムシェルとタブレット、どちらのスタイルでも利用できる。外側画面はタッチ操作に加えて筆圧検知のペン入力もこなす。

　2画面の同時表示も可能で、外側の画面に好きな写真や動画を表示するためのソフトもプリインストールしており、実に楽しい。個人的には変形型よりもこちらのアプローチのほうに大きな可能性を感じる。こちらもまた、未来を先取りしている感覚だ。

　もう1つ、ハイブリッドPCからはデルの「XPS 12」も挙げておきたい。画面がフレームを残してクルッと回転するギミックが特徴だが、この液晶ディスプレイはIPS方式の12.5型フルHD液晶ディスプレイで、表示品質が良好だ。さらにメモリ8Gバイトの構成が選択でき、リーズナブルな価格も魅力的に映る。

●大画面モバイルの進化を期待させる「LaVie X」

　2011年末の同企画において、Ivy Bridge世代で発展を期待したのが大画面モバイルノートだ。

　ノートPCは基本的に、モバイル向け、据え置き向けとジャンル分けされ、モバイル向けでは画面サイズや性能を、据え置き向けではバッテリー駆動時間や可搬性を、割り切った形で進化してきた。2011年に取り上げた「VAIO S（SE）」にはそのジャンルの壁を破る可能性を感じたのだが、今回最初に取り上げたMacBook Pro Retinaディスプレイモデルはこの発展型といえるかもしれない。

　さらに、年末になってNECから大画面Ultrabookの「LaVie X」という新星も現れた。IPS方式で15.6型ワイドの大画面フルHD液晶ディスプレイを搭載しながら、12.8ミリ厚という圧倒的な薄さには驚かされる。約1.56キロの重さも15型クラスのノートPCとしては画期的だ。

　これまでこのようなノートPCはほとんどなかっただけに、現状ではニッチな製品かもしれないが、クリエイティブユースを中心に、もっと大画面かつ高性能を手軽に持ち運びたいという潜在需要は小さくないと思われる。今後はさらなる盛り上がりを期待したい。

●Ultrabookには懸念材料も

　最後に、今回選んだ機種はMacBook Pro Retinaディスプレイモデル以外がすべてUltrabookとなったが、Ultrabookであるという条件を意識したわけではなく、あくまで自然に選んだ結果にすぎない。

　むしろ、Ultrabookについては懸念もある。薄さに関する条件（14型以上は21ミリ以下、14型未満は18ミリ以下、タッチパネル搭載機はプラス2ミリまで可）があるため、ほとんどの製品はユーザーによるバッテリーの着脱が行えず、メモリやストレージの増設や交換もできない。ユーザー自身によるメンテナンスが事実上不可能な場合が多いことは、中上級者にとって従来型のモバイルノートPCより不便だろう。

　個人的にUltrabookは1～2年で使い倒しつつ、最新機種を短いスパンで買い替えていくのも悪くないが、一部の法人向けモデル以外でも、こういうメンテナンスに関する部分をしっかり確保した製品を見てみたいものだ。
